5 reasons to look forward to Pidgin 2.2.2

Tuesday, September 25th, 2007

When you are a MSN + IRC user (like me), Pidgin 2.1.1 2.2.2 will be for you. Why?

1. MSNP14 support!

MSNP14 introduces “status messages”, “currently playing song” and “offline messages”

2. Persistant chatrooms!

When you’ve got some (IRC) chatrooms added to your buddy list you can make them “persistent”. Meaning you can close the chatroom window without actually leaving the room. When there are new messages you will be notified with bold text in the buddy list.

3. Even smaller small list!

Some users even thought the 16×16 were huge! Now the “small view” uses 11×11 pixels status icons (the same that are used in the conversation tabs in 2.2.0).

4. New dialog icons to match the new smiley style!

5. Smiley button returns!

Because smilies are such an important and universal IM feature, the smiley button has returned from the “Insert” menu to the toolbar.

Yeah, definitely looking forward to it for the same reasons. Hopefully comes out on time.

I’m rather excited about the next release (especially because of MSNP14). However I don’t think the dialog icons should be smiley faces. It would make more sense if they were pigeons, or maybe just objects and symbols.

Great! I’ve been waiting for MSNP14.
Every new Pidgin release has made me happier so far. :)

I really hope they tackle MSN file transfers next:

Hopefully they will get around to voice and video soon. It still does not appear to be a priority when everyone in the Windows world is using both since 5 years.

I really wish MSN would go away, but since the rest of the world seems to have completely standardized on it, even for business communication, I’m very happy for anything that lets me at least use Ubuntu and Pidgin in that world…

The other changes are nice, too. :)

Heh, nice work changing the version number. It took me half an hour to realize they didn’t make those changes :D

    Hi all,
I hope something can be done about accessibility. Especially with emoticons & stuff. I talk regularly with a friend who’s sight-disabled. It would be nice if my smileys made some sense to him :(

Really? I haven’t tried the new version yet, I was using the mtn version at the time and all was working well… :(

There is absolutely no info about when msnp14 will be integrated in pidgin.. that really sucks. The milestone msnp14 is done but the branch is not implemented..

    @Hylke,
is it worth trying out the mtn version? which features does it have? Can it handle offline messages for MSN?

yildirim: I don’t use the mtn version anymore, but i always used the main branch so it was merged in, but apperantly they removed it again. Let’s hope for the next release.

I guess the mtn main branch is what will become 2.3 or 3.0, and 2.2.x development happens on a seperate bugfix branch, so these features were never meant to be in 2.2.x…

Well 2.2.2 seems to have come out. I don’t see any MSNP14 support though =(
