Six months ago Sean Egan approached me to do a complete Tango icon set for Gaim. Gaim is now renamed Pidgin and has a fresh new look. All smileys of different protocols now follow the same style and share the same base set of smileys.
It was huge job, but it’s finally done. I’m quite happy with it and will continue to maintain the set. So for questions, comments and requests about the icons you can reach me at: hbonsATpidginDOTim.
Again, we’re one step closer to unify icons on the desktop!

Sweet! Looks great, and I’m very excited about the news. Look forward to seeing more here.
Where are the icons for Jabber or Google Talk? Or is that a dumb question?
Step, they are all in Pidgin mtn.
That looks great! Restecp man!
Gotcha - this is just a sampling then. Very nice.
I was just wondering - cause i really think your icons are awesome, but i figured since those icons in the image i linked you too were already around and looking good you would have used those.. Plus the Windows Live / MSN guy and Yahoo Face would make for a cleaner look on the buddy list window. Just my opinion though.
Good job with the new look!
but on this site - you are linking above, I can’t find any link to get this tangoified Pidgin
Am I blind?
faj3r: you must pull it from the repository, or wait for the official release.
Looks great.
But the grinning face (:D) doesn’t look as funny/laughing/etc. as in the original Tango theme which is not good IMHO.
I like them! But there’s a problem… some MSN emoticons are not similar to the original ones, so when I’m using pidgin with Windows MSN users I’ve problem understanding the meaning of the emoticons… (because they are really different!) I think it’s necessary to redraw some icons in order to make them more similar to the original ones. Maybe it’s possible to create a tango theme based on the official MSN theme….
The icons are great, but as Raideiin said, some doesn’t really represent the intention of the sender. Think that sometimes the meaning of the symbol does not match the meaning of the intention.
For example, giving a symbol X, a given rendition of X is more important than the actual meaning of X. Even if both renditions shows the same symbol.
I know that that would cost you time, but I think it’s the right thing to do :/
Anyway, thanks!
Hylke, I love the sample icons you have up here, but I’m still waiting for them to be released with Pidgin. Do you know what version they will be included in?
SL: what do you mean? They are all in.
Any chance we can get the source SVGs that were used?
Tray icons and status icons would be especially nice to have, but I would understand if you don’t want to distribute them?
ABC: The SVG’s are in the Pidgin source tarball, under GPL.
Beautiful icons, great work.
This is a stupid question, but I’ve just spent the last 30 minutes searching through the release tarball and SVN. Where exactly in SVN (or in the tarball) are the SVG versions of these lovely icons? There are some smaller .png’s in the pidgin/pixmaps directory, but no SVG’s.
Sorry for being stupid, but could you point us to exactly where they are? Thank you!
Liam: When you want, for example, SVG’s of the smilies, look in /pidgin/pixmaps/emotes/24×24/scalable/.
Ah, found it. For anyone looking for SVG emotes–don’t bother to download the package–view the source code repository, under pidgin/pixmaps/emotes/default/24/scaleable/
Not sure if this link will work, but it seems to be the main branch: http://developer.pidgin.im/viewmtn/revision/browse/7002e900cf6a9a610849fa4d5c2d0dbe981d1f5e/pidgin/pixmaps/emotes/default/24/scalable
Hylke, sorry for the slow response! I looked through the repository but I couldn’t find the emoticons featured on the preview of this page–the Tango icons on the Pidgin website have different eyes. The version of Tango that I’m looking for is the one that Andrea modified into the Tiny icon set. It may be stupid of me that I can’t figure this out–is this just a question of icon sizes or something? Sorry for any bother!
SL: True, I updated the style a bit. I saw the old one somewhere on gnome-look.org.
Hey, I love your icon set! When I saw it, I thought “at last”! Bye bye horrid MSN icons! Your icons are very cute and positive! They rule!
