Update: GNOME 3: Tabs and People

Saturday, July 12th, 2008

Update: Yes, ofcourse this is a joke, it was set up at GUADEC. Thanks for all the concerning responses! :)

Actually dobey, I, and although I’m not a hacker I do some UI design for Pidgin. I was impressed with the new direction for GNOME 3.0, and the modifications made to Banshee and Totem, and I think we should redesign Pidgin to fit in with the next generation of desktops.

Pidgin tab support

If the Pidgin devs don’t agree with this I’m going to fork Pidgin and call it Hidgin.

What people think...

Too many tabs. Tabs everywhere - that’s stupid.

having tabs to split contact list and conversations, or online and offline contacts seems practical, but having tabs for every group and status is just dumb.

The tabs for the groups are good idea but for de status… I agree with Livio too many tabs…

Actually tabs for groups is a bad idea too, because this will make the window wide, or else there willl not be enough place for all my groups. Mind that in this screenshot there are just three groups, and they have short names. Well, you get the idea…

  5.  Saturday, July 12th, 2008 at 20:53

Hahaha, Hidgin ;) Anyways, The idea of tabs is not that bad, but people shouldn’t be seperated by Availiable/Busy and so on, because many of the Busy people are still “Beschickbaar”, you can IM them.

I hope every protocol gets its own two tab rows :D

So much clicking for so little use. That’s horrible, plain horrible. The idea of tabs should die in fire.

    Excellent :-)

i kinda agree with troll. its just adding so much to pidgin where it took so long to get the send button back onto the chat screen..

how is a user going to be identified if someone from another tab has had a status change or something? and i dont get the top row.. is that for the user? or for the contacts? to show that u are away or busy or ur showing the away/busy contacts from ur list?

i think it needs some thought, tabs are great but they can just be pointless.

one idea tho, you could have tabs to change settings directly and often, rather then going to preferences and scrolling down, and/or having to find
the plugin to then ammend its config.

maybe some sort of image brower tab, to change ur profile image quickly without having to find in nautirlus+click+drag..

    just a thought

This joke really isn’t funny any more… Idiotic tabs in so many of my RSS feeds! Yes, it was funny the first time. Stop now.

I’m laughing so hard right now.
    Awesome dude! ;-)

You have to be kidding me.

That many tabs make me want to puke.

  15.  Saturday, July 12th, 2008 at 22:57

DEFINITELY too many tabs - some sort of filter would be better, but I think you’re on the right track. Pidgin could really use a makeover. Please incorporate native (or at least “Human”) tab close buttons if this Hidgin thing does happen.

Shame on you! You just copied my new feature for empathy! :P

I … *think* this is a joke. If it is, it’s hilarious. If not, I’m worried you’ve suddenly lost your mind. :D

wasted space beside tabs, too many awful borders, not mentioning vertical text I’ve seen somewhere else.. I think that’s for east asian people ? RIGHT ?

We should find the guy who starded this tab-thing, and burn him.

If you fork it, you should call it HIGdin. :-P

What’s so good about tab? In some programs like Web Browser, tab is surely useful but in Totem….bah it is quite not useful at all simply because you have the Playlist there, and you don’t two songs at the same time on different tabs right?

I love your idea about tabtifiy Pidgin, but I find your mockup is not easier to use. It just make things so more complicated.

D’oh, that’s all mockups and all the guys were kidding :D .

Let it be a plugin. Then have people who like this tabs the possibility to use it.
