SparkleShare 0.2 beta2 for Mac

Sunday, February 13th, 2011

This winter I’ve been busy porting SparkleShare to work on the Mac. Here’s a first beta. The second beta for Linux will follow soon.

If you decide to give it a go, please make sure to read the documentation first, as the way of setting it all up isn’t very user friendly yet. You can download SparkleShare for Mac here.

Special thanks to the MonoMac team, for making native applications on the Mac a breeze!

UPDATE: Forgot to mention: you need to have Git, or a symbolic link to it, in /usr/bin/git.

The NEWS file:

0.2-beta2 for Mac (Sat Feb, 2011):
Hylke: Mac version! Massive restructure of the code to an MVC-like model
to make building different front-ends easier. Ported the event logs to
Webkit, so users can style it to their liking. It also reduces the amount
of UI-porting that needs to be done between toolkits.

For some reason I can’t set up sparkleshare with a self hosted repo. I can log in and clone the repo but the setup form gives me an error. Cloning the repo manually into the sparkleshare folder works right away

Okay found the problem: I entered the complete ssh://user@server/path thing into the address field and that didn’t work.

The project is very interesting, I think it will gain popularity as many people have sort of a home server machine they keep running to keep their files centralized. With SparkleShare available, this means the end of shared folders, hello personal cloud.

    :)

Do you plan a Windows beta release?
    (I know, I know… Windows…)

I have followed the instructions on this page:
    http://smyck.net/2011/02/13/how-to-setup-sparkleshare-beta2-for-mac-on-your-own-server/
To set up sparkleshare on my own server (in this case testing on dreamhost).

When I enter the address and folder name I get the coffee-time message and then “Something Went Wrong” with an option to try again - which doesn’t work.

Is there any way to debug what is happening to I can try and fix it - “Something went wrong” isn’t so helpful :(

I second Dean. Would like a windows version, or instructions on how to compile one.

    Hi,

does the Linux version run under KDE as well, or does it require Nautilus to work?

  8.  Tuesday, February 15th, 2011 at 16:35
    Hylke

@oliver: it should just work, but you won’t get the nautilus plugin that allows you to check out older revisions or create web links.

Long long awaited! And it works great, thank you very much, this is exactly what i’ve waited for! I tested it with 2 macs and the sync works in seconds from one to another mac.

    Thank you and good luck!

@Michael: Cool! I’m going to make it sync instantly in one of the next versions.

Will the Mac version be compatible with PPC or Intel only?

    Hylke

@Josh I only know it works on Intel.

Hi, just tried the Mac version but I can’t get it to work. I have my own git repo, which I can access without a passphrase. It is located at reykjavik.local. I have set up a user for git, namely gites. So, in the adress field I input gites@reykjavik.local. Then, the test repository is placed on a share accesible only for gites, git. The repository is called praca. The absolute path to this repository is /volume1/git/praca - I put that in the folder name field. When I try to sync, all I get is a “Something went wrong…” message. What am I doing wrong? :)

RE: UPDATE: Forgot to mention: you need to have Git, or a symbolic link to it, in /usr/bin/git.

Can’t you check /usr/local/git/bin/git and see if it’s there? I think that’s the default installation location for the git osx installer. Better yet, the user could set the git location in preferences.

    Hylke

@Brad Pitcher: it now checks ‘whereis git’ for the location. No preference needed.

    Hey Guys,

thanks a million, great thing!!!!! Works great with own server.

    I’ll donate you some $!

Anyway one question - had no time to go through sources…

What the heck is this: [irc][folder] Connected. Now listening… (204.62.14.135)

Perhaps you use Irc for notifications? That would be a good idea, but in general i’m paranoid concerning my files… can i change this manually in the config (using an own ircd) ?

    many thanks,
    chris

    Hylke

@chris Happy to hear it’s of use to you!

It does use irc for notifying of changes. I have added an option to use your own ircd. I will document how to do this before the stable comes out.

    chris

    @hylke: great, thanks!

today i will take a look in the code…
if i find it out how i will start playing with the irc server…

I think stable will take time, do you think it is possible that you could just paste me sth. to my email (e.g. config)?

    cheers,
    chris

Can you make a release that will work with OSX Leopard? Thanks!

  22.  Wednesday, April 6th, 2011 at 17:13
    Hylke

@icarito MonoMac, which SparkleShare is build on, doesn’t work on anything older than Snow Leopard. So I can’t fix that unfortunately…

    Hi devs,

    Thanks for this project.
    I will try it out.

Question: Why another sync project in Mono? There is already iFolder in mono.
Is there some relation to that project?

    kind regards

  24.  Wednesday, April 13th, 2011 at 15:06
    Hylke

@Atif iFolder is not as easy to use. I really care about the language of a project, it’s just easier for me.

    Hi!

This is a great piece of work. Do you think you can provide some instructions on how to build the application on OS X? I’m currently using a newer and unsupported version, and would like to build a new version of sparkleshare.

    Thanks! :)
