Ubuntu icon theme

Friday, February 15th, 2008

Another update:

Version 0.0.5 is now available here.

Update:

Thanks everyone for the positive repsonses! I’ve never thought this theme to be this popular.

Unfortunately there is not a very big chance this will be the default theme in Ubuntu, but I will do my best to get it in as an alternative set. :)

Recently I switched from openSUSE to Ubuntu, no regrets until now, only positive things! openSUSE has let me down for some time now (package management and speed being the main reasons) and I found what I needed in Ubuntu 7.10.
There is one thing that annoys me, and that’s Ubuntu’s default look, openSUSE looks great from the start. Now Lapo did a great job on the Tangerine icons, but they were still a bit too “dark” for my taste. So I thought why not try to make a theme myself?

Some idea’s I came up with what the theme should be about, without losing the “Ubuntu Feel” : Jungle, Safari, Survival, Classical.

You can download a small preview, just extract the file in ~/.icons and select the Discovery icon theme in the theme manager. The icons are under CC-by-SA (except some leftover Tangerine files you may find in there).

What people think...

Great icons, but why the departure from the GNOME style? (I mean, the category have already been done for the GNOME icon-theme)

Wow those are some really great icons! :-)

But in the preview posted here, they are a bit too blurry around the edges. (my opinion).

    Great Job!

Gideon: Because it’s fun to try something new, and I don’t like the GNOME color palette very much. ( btw, jij bent de broer van Daniel toch? Ken hem van Informatiekunde :) )

BradwJensen: Which ones do you mean? Maybe I can fix it.

Hey, pretty neat set of icons, I really like it and I’m using it right now… btw, can you post (or send me, whatever) suse’s icon theme if you have it around, I love that folder icon (it’s a little bit different from old tango’s grey)

Phrodo_00: I like those as well, don’t have them around now. You can get the GNOME Live CD and copy the icons from /usr/share/icons/Industrial/.

Raideiin: When Firefox 3 is out your current theme icons will be used in Firefox automatically.

    Hello, Hylke!

Great icons! I’d change just one detail in the computer icon. While the perspective is totally well done for a monitor drawing, the borders look blurred in 48×48. Try make it flat :)

Keep up the good work! :D

The burry ones right off the bat seen by me are the trashcans edges.. the left and right side of the folder icons, and the my computer icons monitors left and right side.. the internet icon’s nice, but i feel you could go a bit better and lose the stand idea.. to make it simpler. (just my opinions.)

On ubuntu-art list you told them, that Fedora is using Tangoish artwork.
“Echo”, ugly, kid-style icon set is being developed for F9 :s .

Damn! these are AWESOME, this is just the kind of refresh ubuntu needs for it’s icon theme, it would kick ass if it was defailt! Ubuntu’s theme and included themes and mainly most other icons themes I have tried have blurry icons in a lot of menus and some of the icons just aren’t up to the quality of the rest. Every Icon in this is amazing, and not one blurry Icon I’ve seen yet. Awesome job dude these are great, the msot professional icons I’ve seen in a long time.

Ohhhh Hylke, every time I think you can’t possibly amaze me any more with your icons, you go and produce something like this.

These are a refreshing change and a welcome addition to my own personal icon themes. I simply adore the office and internet icons. (There are actually too many I adore to list — those were just the ones I saw in the preview screen that captured my attention.)

Please, please, keep creating these wonderful icons (svg releases would be nice too, ;) )

You should really submit those for inclusion (as default!) in 8.04!

    Hello!
I saw your Discover icon theme and i want to tell you that they are great (more than that).
Still i noticed that there is not so many mimetypes (fact: regular pc user most of the times see mimetypes+ folders) so i decided to di it by my self.
I know that your set is not finished yet but you can see what i´v done so maybe you get some inspiration!?

There are nearly 300 mimetypes icons (still not finished).
    See them here:
    http://jakonj.googlepages.com/mimetypes-svg.7z

    What do you think?

This is great! Love it! Keep up the good work. I agree with everyone, it might become a strong candidate of ubuntu’s new default icon theme.

Very great icons. I was wondering if I could port these to Windows with your permission. I don’t quite understand what “CC-by-SA 2.5″ means. Sorry.

Ant: you are free to do so! :)

Hmm sorry to bother so much but after extracting the files from the tar.gz (using Winrar on Windows) I couldn’t find any of your icons in the preview. How can I actually get those? (I’m on Windows right now)

    Hylke

Ant: you are right some of the bigger sizes aren’t in yet, but the smaller icons are all in there. I’m planning an update on the theme soon and will put everything in.

    Ant

Oh ok. Anyway I look forward to your next release man. These icons are awesome and I wish they were default in Ubuntu. It’s a bit hard porting them to Windows though since I don’t have any PNGs to work with so I have to open the SVG in Adobe Illustrator and export as PNG. The only bad thing is that for some reason some icons lose some attributes. Like for some example xfce-sound. For some reason when I export it, the three lines representing the sound are left out. I don’t why it does that. I don’t know why with some SVGs it does that while with others it doesn’t. Probably a fault on my part but I can’t figure out how else to do it. Anyways thanks for your time and your hard work. You’re very creative! :D

Could you please put the icons again?
    Thank you!

I really like your icon theme, however, I really can’t tell what the ‘help’ icon –the one that appears on the ‘help’ buttons– means! Why not use the default one, the lifebuoy, instead?

Thanks for making this theme. I’ve been wanting to try out this new version, but i don’t think the deviantart link is working (most of the icons don’t show up) and I can’t seem to find any other mirror.. does anyone have a working/complete file?

  46.  Wednesday, March 5th, 2008 at 23:43

    Hey,

This is a bit off course here, but I was wondering if you could make a few extra smileys for pidgin. One for lol/LOL and one for LMAO/lmao/LMFAO/lmfao

I found it quite fun to have them once i installed this smiley set:
    http://customize.org/mirandasmile/skins/47921

And think it should be standard in pidgin :)

Brightens up my face every time i see one. :P

Hi, Your icon theme is wonderfull, but gnome doesn’t discern some files with another ones (for example the .doc, .xls, .txt uses the same icon).
I looked into the theme folder and I added some relative links with some icons to get a better distinction between one extension and another one.
I didn’t added any image, I just added some links.
If you are interested about this I can build you a new icon package with this changes and then send it to you.
